Swordfish and Tuna

The Southern and Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery stretches WA’s coastline and extends north to Cape York Peninsula in Queensland and to the South Australian/Victorian Border.

The longline fishery targets broadbill swordfish, bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna, which are landed in the key ports of Fremantle, Geraldton, Albany, Exmouth and Carnarvon. The catch is exported chilled to markets in Japan and the United States generating around $34 million in export income per year.

A Commonwealth managed fishery, the prime management methods include limited entry, gear and area restrictions. A new management plan for the fishery is currently being developed. This will see the introduction of a Total Allowable Catch and Individual Tradeable Quota (ITQ) as the key management tools.

The industry body representing tuna and billfishers is Tuna West.
