The vast majority of Western Australian snapper is harvested in the waters off Carnarvon, one of the most pollution free regions of the world. The fishery operates within the World Heritage listing guidelines for Shark Bay.
This managed fishery targets oceanic stocks of snapper, genetically distinct from the inner gulf Shark Bay stocks, primarily fished by recreational fishers.
New management plans were introduced in 2001, which saw the introduction of a quota system, which reduced the total commercial catch by 50%, a further 40% reduction was introduced in 2003 to protect stock levels. Through buy-back schemes the number of professional fishermen operating in the fishery was reduced. The domestic and national market consumes the majority of the catch with a small proportion being exported to Japan, the USA, Taiwan and Italy.
