The two major professional blue swimmer crab fisheries are based in the Peel/Harvey Estuary in the south and Shark Bay in the north.
The fishery is managed through size limits, gear restrictions, time and area closures. The total annual commercial catch of crabs is monitored through information provided by fishermen on their monthly catch and effort returns. Fishermen also provided detailed information via a voluntary daily research logbook program.
The number of professional fishermen has been reduced through buy back schemes. There is no direct count on the number of recreational crab fishers.
