Aquaculture is a major growth area in Western Australia and (excluding south sea pearls) is primarily based on the production of mussels, oysters, marron, yabby, trout, algae (for beta carotene), barramundi, abalone, ornamental fish and black pearl oysters.
New industries include the harvest of black pearls from Shark Bay and the Abrolhos Islands, the first commercial hatchery production of scallop spat and the seeding of an aquaculture site off Geraldton.
Abalone hatcheries and grow out facilities have been established at Bremer Bay and Albany. Prawn farming is also being developed in the state’s north.
Other species being developed for future commercial production include silver perch, rocklobster, groper and trout in inland saline areas.
Mussels, rainbow trout and barramundi production is primarily for the domestic market, while marron, yabbies and oysters are exported to Asia and Europe.
