WAFIC plays an important role in developing a practical approach to occupational health and safety in the fishing and aquaculture industries. Services to industry include:
Development and maintenance of industry Codes of Practice incorporating legislative requirements and safe working practices for fishermen and crew,
Production of training materials including brochures, videos, booklets and guidelines for use by owners, skippers and crew.
Specific training courses to supplement the Codes of Practice
Managing externally funded OH&S projects. Current projects include:
The national extension of the WAFIC OH&S Industry Code (FRDC)
Industry accident statistics (FRDC)
Development of a software based uptake tool to measure the use of the WAFIC OH&S Industry Code (FRDC).
Maintaining a register of experienced and qualified OH&S consultants across regional areas within the state.
Assisting government agencies and departments implement training and awareness initiatives, such as the WorkSafe WA ThinkSafe program .
WAFIC has produced various products that are available to industry to assist in the development of an occupational health and safety approach for their business. These products include:
WAFIC OH&S industry code, including updates on an as required basis,
WAFIC safety induction video and training manual
WAFIC safety induction booklet
Storm Alert Video - A guide to severe weather at sea training video (produced the Department of Transport with WAFIC assistance)
Training and Education
WAFIC is recognised by the WA Government as the Fishing and Aquaculture Industry Training Advisory Body (ITAB). The role of the ITAB is to manage the training functions under the direction of the WAFIC Board. Each year the ITAB develops, with industry consultation, a strategic Industry Training Plan that details the education and training needs of the industry.
The national Seafood Industry Training Package offers a comprehensive suite of education and training courses with qualification levels in Aquaculture, Fishing Operations, Fishing Charter Operations, Fisheries Compliance, Seafood Processing and Seafood Sales and Distribution.
WAFIC also co-ordinates FarmBis and other training funding mechanisms, making them easily accessible to industry.
